Recall in Belgium and the Netherlands
Sambucol for Kids has been recalled in Belgium and the Netherlands; however Potassium Sorbate (E202) is allowed in the UK. Should you be worried?
What is the reason for the recall? - As far as we can tell from this, the issue is supposedly that Potassium Sorbate is not allowed in Belgium and the Netherlands for children under 4, due to their perception that there is insufficient evidence of its safety. Because the labelling states that younger children can have it, the product needs to be relabelled for sale there; however there is no dispute that the product is safe for children over 4.
What is the background for Potassium Sorbate safety in under 4s? - This is just 2 countries, not an EU-wide ban. And it is not based on any specific safety concern. Potassium Sorbate has been used as a preservative in many countries for at least 50 years with no known safety issues.
Our opinion? - We think this is red tape gone mad. If you are concerned, do not give this product to children under 4.
